.or what i deem as the dust collector in all of alaska.
i went to titlewave books today. i purchased four newly used novels. classics.
i. animal farm--george orwell. i've read it many times, but it's my favorite, so i had to. 3 bucks. done deal.
ii. lord of the flies--william golding.
iii. nine stories (shorts)--j.d. salinger.
iv. to kill a mockingbird--harper lee.
.the goal.
.also known as "probably not going to happen."
i'm going to read the books that i purchased along with the other dust collectors. and in a timely fashion.
but first, a quick rundown from tallest to shortest of THE collection (yes, i'm still OCD in that sense):
the holy bible (eh. it happens sometimes.)
flannery o'connor's complete shorts
the nanny diaries (never did finish the last few pages)
the screwtape letters (one day...)
the kite runner (read the first 10 pages; my only airport book purchase)
the heart of darkness (it's so little, but dense...i'm scared)
shaken not stirred (a martini recipe book...i think i'll read one or two chapters now...it's that whole thought into action thing)
harry potter 1 (since it hasn't happened yet, it probably won't--i love the movies, though)
watership down (another classic that i've read many a time...oh, fiver).
we get to the GOOD ones (caitlin, cue your chiding):
nineteen eighty-four
brave new world (it's been over 2 years now with that one...i really do like it, though)
and then the recent purchases.
if there is no other new year's resolution to be successful at, by golly, it will be reading these books.
mind expansion: by not reading, i'm basically saying, "hm. i'm comfortable with a shriveling, unwrinkled brain."
i think i need a bit of poking and prodding, though (cue caitlin, again). suggest my first read, someone. i was thinking about the kite runner, but now i'm really excited about mockingbird, flies, and even the salinger shorts!
hm.
in other news: happy mlk, jr. day. for me, i didn't really celebrate his rememberance so much as celebrate not working, but mlk, jr. is a great man. granted, i don't know him and i'm writing like i do, but go mlk, jr.
in other other news: the beer and barley wine festival is next weekend and i just realized i'm on primary, which means i can't drink. i'm going to see if i can switch shifts with a co-worker...it's sampling 30 local beers for pete's sake! that's basically heaven on earth. i can't possibly forsake such an event.
in other other other news: i went cross-country skiing after the hiatus to the South. brian and i had a fabulous time wiping out on the steady (and sometimes scary) downhill descents of powerline pass. instead of facing the potential unknown turn or drop-off, you wipe out. and i got to use my new gaitors. gaitors: snow- and water-resistant knee-high protection. trust me. they're cool. and i look cool in them.
and finally, in other other other other news: i went with my housemates to a martini party at this couple's house we know, bob and peggy (the couple, that is). cosmos and vodka martinis. yum. and the food was delish. and then since we hadn't been out in eons, we went barhopping. 7 drinks later, i had a great night. :) and i leave you photos from the evening. i'm not gonna lie; we're pretty hot. i'm not gonna lie; deflate my ego.

of course, the aviators had to make an appearance.

glad that cigarette is not in your mouth!!!! Lord of the flies is pretty interesting, but since you have already started kite runner, I vote that you read that first. Lord of the flies should be a fast read. Go, Dan, go!!!
Kite Runner is sooooooooo good...let me know what you think!
