So, James wrote this to explain what JV life is like to a friend...this is perhaps one of the most creative, authentic, and real ways to tell of it...and funny as hell...
JVC Anchorage: A team of dastardly do-gooders striking out in the name of simplicity, social justice, community, and spirituality…
The Cast--
Daniel Norfleet--a fun, energetic, quirky Asian Alabaman with a propensity for cuddling on the couch, and making loud noises, especially during competitive activities. In one classic episode, Dan ponders “Why did god put me with y’all…” Most likely will freeze during the winter.
Clare “Blue” Charles--a smart, sarcastically cynical sense of humored Spokanite with a good natured and warm heart. Will be the object of many Alaskan’s desire. Specializes in art and breaking Alaskan hearts.
Mary Hegel--a historically minded, smart, and insightful matron from Montana. Likes crossword puzzles, yoga, and conversation. Supplies our fearless do-gooders with the majority of their tasty sustenance.
Matt Serres--the occasionally elusive, atheistic, experimental Stanford grad from Oregon. Likes movies, Portland, and a competitive game of anything. Has a crooked thumb and large burned DVD collection to keep our do-gooders entertained during the long, dark winter.
Katie Lederle--the fun-loving Gonzaga grad from Colorado. Quick to laugh, smile, and take advantage of her Thursday and Friday nights. Loves music, a back scratch, and a good farting joke.
James Noonan--the occasionally red-headed BC grad with a passion for Florence and a 40. This California boy spends his free time engaging in anything from FROLF to curling and is always armed with an insightful thought and available for a good time.
The Stage--
A house that has the air of a free-love 70’s past. Shag carpet that creeps onto the walls, pink marlin mascot over the fireplace, octagon table, various mementoes of JVs years past including, but not excluded to, a pool table, the much-used foosball table, a can of musk ox chunked in gravy, pictures of JPII’s Anchorage visit before their birth, and hall of legends.
The Location--
Just outside of downtown Anchorage Alaska next to the float plane airport (prop float planes flying frequently overhead during the summer). Anchorage, a suburban city in search of a cultural center. Lots of strip malls, a few skyscrapers--all around large city with a small town feel, nestled between inlets waters and towering mountain. Jumping off point for the rest of this vast wild state.
The Plot--
We join our dastardly do-gooders as they join the battle for justice in an unjust world and struggles to save the world one faltering step at a time at various social services agencies (homeless teenage shelter, soup kitchen/homeless day shelter, domestic abuse shelter, and AIDS Assistance Agency) by day. By night these peace-loving avengers come home to eat around the octagon table of justice and take on the larger issues of personal spirituality, social justice, and the epic battles of good vs. evil--red vs blue on the foosball table. When not exploring the inner reaches of Anchorage’s marginalized or their own inner depths these justice fighters lives come together around moose sightings, Alaskan outdoor outings, sweat lodges, curling, hanging out with former volunteers, and exploring the natural, cultural, and gastronomical highlights of Anchorage on $80 a month.
Let the camera’s roll…
