.adventures with snow camping.

so, the spontaneous decision to pull together a group to go camping last friday was...adventurous? not thinking there would be THAT much snow left given it was may 4th, we foraged to a nearby trailhead and wanted to camp for the night. the itch to get outdoors was too strong not to scratch it, i guess. [don't you sort of hate people that write in metaphors; i do; guilty as charged.]

well..we brought snowshoes just in case of snow, but not winter hiking boots. i'm sure you know where this is going: snow up to our thighs in places and no dry land anywhere around. with freezing toes, we actually set up our tents on an open area of snow. staking our tent poles and laying on the snow, needless to say, it was a bit chilly. fortunately, my better judgment directed me towards rei for a new sleeping bag that day before leaving, so i was actually pretty warm once in my bag. i have pictures that i'll post of our view from our tent door. oh, uhhlasscuh. we actually needed the wine to keep warm since fires weren't a possibility. :)

my two good friends brian and bev are leaving the state today and tomorrow. alaska is a great place to meet amazing people, but the transient nature of the state leaves some ache when ones you grow to love and share your time with decide to start the next non-Alaskan chapter in their lives.
